Thinking of others

First, for legal reasons, I don’t want to name names. Also, I feel like I should make some type of warning. Knowing how to hear and understand your gut instincts is important in adulthood. As children, we trust the adults in our lives to guide us. Right now, life is very expensive and complicated. I wish that there was a Hitchhiker’s Guide to adulthood.

When you have a pile of loans and bills looking at you every morning, you will get anxious and greedy. I want to do what I love as a career. A paying career would be even better. I will start at the beginning; it started with a random email while I was working. It was a company looking for a graphic designer, and they liked my work. I verified everything and felt so excited for the opening.

The first red flag was how much they wouldn’t tell me about what I was going to do. Once we confirmed the offer and how much I would get paid, I should have asked all of my questions. With their word and promise, I thought I would get started with training right away. I should have questioned it and I should not have given them my information. The next problem was that direct deposit “didn’t work”. I have never had a problem with my bank. That was not the end of the story.

They seemed kind and welcoming, but they were rude once I decided to resend the offer. I am still horrified that I am now in a huge mess. I wish I had listened to the people around me and my gut. Now I have to do what I have to do. I know that it was a scam because I was falsely charged $600, but my bank flagged it for me. I have learned a huge and lasting lesson.

I will try my best not to be so hard on myself. I will not let this make my life harder. I will warn others and make a report with the government. Just remember we can be fooled by smart people and complex scams. I wasn’t sure where to go, so I started with Social Security. They gave me the information I needed to go forward.

To sum everything up, when life gets rushed and stressful, we can make mistakes. First, ask every question up front. Then ask even more questions. If there is one red flag, you might find more red flags. Do not take jobs that are not in your country, unless you are ready to move there. It will save you time and effort.

Even if the pay is great, eight out of ten times, there are people they can hire locally. Travel work and airlines are different job categories not related to this. Trust your gut; it will save you from a lot of issues. Last, be kind to yourself and remember self-love above all.
